A collection of thirteen eerie tales by esteemed American authors from the early 20th century forms the basis of this anthology. The concept for this collection was conceived by Henry Mills Alden, a prominent American author who served as the editor of 'Harper's Magazine' for half a century (1869-1919). He intended to compile anthologies featuring outstanding American authors of the time, in collaboration with the highly regarded author William Dean Howells, who was the editor of the 'Atlantic Monthly'. This resulted in the publication of eight volumes on a variety of themes, known as the Harper's Novelettes.
Originally published in 1907 as 'Shapes that Haunt the Dusk', the anthology included ten stories. This expanded edition from Leonaur features thirteen stories, including 'His Apparition' by William Dean Howells himself, as well as two additional works by one of the original contributors, Madeline Yale Wynne, namely 'My Ghost of a Chance' and the sequel to 'The Little Room'. Other skilled authors whose finely crafted stories are included in this collection are Hildegard Hawthorne, E.D Miller, Howard Pyle, and Richard Rice, among several others.
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles. Each title is available in both softcover and hardback with a dust jacket, allowing readers to experience these captivating stories in a format that suits their preferences.
